Author: Margaret Mansfield
Average review score:

DON'T HATE ON THE 5 STAR BOOK
This book was the best book that I have ever read. It would open up the hearts of all the white people who don't like black people. This man put his life on the line. He turned his self black knowing about all of the evil things that can happen to him while he was traveling through the deep South. I know ain't no white person would wanna turn themselves black just to see what it would be like. I am glad that I picked up this book. This book made tears come to my eyes. It should be in the school librarys ....

K.D THOUGHT OF A GREAT BOOK
I REALY LIKE THIS BOOK. IT WAS BASED ON A MAN WHO WANTED TO KNOW WHAT RACISM WAS LIKE. AND HE WAS FACED WITH THE DESISSION OF BECOMING A BLACK MAN. AFTER HE CAM E TO A CONCIOUS DISCION ABOUT IT, HE DARKENED HIS SKIN AND MOVED TO AT THAT TIME A VERY SEGRAGATED PLACE. HE FACED LITTLE DISRIMANTION AND WAS ABLE TO COME OUT OF IT, WITH A FEW IDENTITY CHANGES.

Bread of Three Rivers
Published in Hardcover by Beacon Press (October, 2001)
Author: Sara Mansfield Taber
Average review score:

Fabulous Book
I just love the style of this portrait of all the people who contribute to a perfect loaf of French Bread. Beats Peter Mayle hands down in authenticity and beautiful writing.

Delicious reading, fascinating from page 1 to the end
I loved this book! It is a wonderful read, the language always fresh, and the author's insights wise, sometime sad, but always big hearted. I learned a lot about modern-day France, but also salt, yeast, water, wheat -- and how the whole world is kneaded into something as simple as a good loaf of bread.

Contessa
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (March, 1984)
Author: Helene Mansfield
Average review score:

Wonderful Book - Read It Many Times!!
Contessa is a great book which I've been reading since the early eighties, when I was a child, and which I finished again today. It never disappoints and, like the other reviewer, it is difficult to imagine that the characters are not real when history is brought alive so vividly. This is a book which I have grown up with and will, I imagine, be re-reading for years to come.

What a great book!
This is an excellent book; I have been re-checking it out of the local library for the past thirteen years. History comes alive in the hands of the gifted author Mansfield, who carries the reader from the pre-Revolutionary years in Russia through World II in France and beyond. Her Russian heroine, Valentina, is by far one of the most interesting characters to read about, and one can almost believe that she was a real person who lived through all these world events. An excellent book for anyone who is fascinated with world history and romance, highly recommended. I loved it because I could not put it down. If you loved Danielle Steel's ZOYA, you will love this just as well.

Football Defense of the Future: The 2-Level Model
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (January, 1988)
Authors: Bill Arnsparger and John Mansfield Thomson
Average review score:

Defensive keys are rarely, shared or discussed, its all here
After 26 years of coaching the slant defense and the multiple stunt packages associated with it, our team needed more variety with less predictability. The "2-Level Defense" not only gives us the method or means for implementation, but it goes further than any text that I have read in regards to sharing "KEYS". It is critical, when analyzing a new defensive scheme, that all that you have done in the past is not lost. This book bridges this issue with clear and concise communication and practice organization. When you purchase this book, you will get MORE than enough straight forward data to implement as much or as little of this defense into your current scheme for your 'force unit' and your 'cover unit'. If you can't teach it, you can't coach it... You cannot implement defense's that are so foreign to your young men that they cannot grasp it quickly. Everything you do on the field must be done as efficiently as possible so that maximum learning occurs. This text gives you everything you need to implement as much or as little of the defensive concepts into your current scheme as you choose.

Excellent technical manual....that is a must have!!
In my opinion one of the greatest technical manuals written for football. This is how all football coaching books should be written. Authored by coaching legends from both Canada and the US, this book reviews the evolution of modern defensive football theory and then explores a radical new concept of football defense and unvails a complete and thorough plan for implementation of the ideas presented. Excellent diagrams and stop action photographs help the authors illustrate each of their key points. The authors also present gameplans and drills for defensing today's modern offenses. Anyone interested in an "attacking defensive philosophy" should grab a hold of this book and read it religously. Rare and Hard to find but well worth it!!!!

Gravity Is a Mystery
Published in Library Binding by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (October, 1986)
Authors: Franklyn Mansfield Branley and Don Madden
Average review score:

Gravity is a mystery
This book is as important as it is wonderful. It brings home the Big Secret about science that escapes most people: Science is about the unknown, not the known. There are lots of mysteries out there; the business of science is to change the unknown into the known, which is the lesson, I think, of Franklyn Branley's masterpiece.

A Favorite for my 3 year old!
In 1990, my husband went to the library and brought home " gravity is a mystery" for our son to read. He loved it! It was his favorite book for weeks! Every night one of us would have to read it to him. This is a fun book that everyone should get a chance to read.

Journey into a Black Hole
Published in Library Binding by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (February, 1988)
Authors: Franklyn Mansfield Branley and Marc Simont
Average review score:

Funny and informative at the same time
This book is a children's introduction to the most awesome (if unseen) inhabitant of the night sky: the black hole! Using simple words and concepts, the book explains where black holes come from, and describes their nature. This is all done using the vehicle of a small boy first talking to an astronomer, and then using his imagination to travel to a black hole wearing a space suit.

My seven-year-old son jumped at this book. I liked that it was pretty easy for him to understand (except that the author repeatedly mentioned "mass" without ever defining the word). The pictures are wonderfully whimsical, while still contributing forcefully to what is being discussed in the text. Overall, I would say that this is a great book for children - funny and informative at the same time.

Real science presented in easy words and great illustrations
What happens to a star when it dies? A small child dons a spacesuit to find out. The gravity of the black hole stretches him out. Another child considers a thimbleful of black hole on a seesaw, outweighing a stack of elephants.

This book is full of hard science. But it is presented in easy words that a child of 4-8 can understand. The bright illustrations are full of motion and lend understanding and excitement to the subject.

The Lewis & Clark Cookbook: Historic Recipes from the Corps of Discoveryand Jefferson's America
Published in Paperback by Celestial Arts (January, 2003)
Author: Leslie Mansfield
Average review score:

Lewis and Clark Lovers be aware
This is THE L&C cookbook. Took a course on L&C where at end of term, we had to do a project. One group cooked various foods using this book. HUGE hit with class. Granted some recipes are from Jeffersonian VA to make a book (hey he sponsored it as well as being in the right era) but all are authentic and ones tested so far were quite tasty.

Well worth waiting for!
I also am a big Lewis and Clark buff; in addition, an avid cook, with my own cookbook. This book finally came out several months after it was supposed to, but it was worth the wait!

Most cookbooks, even the ones that sound like they should have exotic recipes, have the same old stuff, based on boring ingredients that produce ho-hum meals. Not this book! The author clearly knows about good food, and the recipes are a breath of fresh air. They're not terribly hard to make, either.

Visiting my folks over Christmas, the whole family decided to have a Lewis+Clark dinner, just for fun. Everyone helped, and we had: Parsnip Fritters, Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage, Shrimp Bisque, and since we couldn't decide between the Rack of Venison with Rosemary-Dijon Crust and Roast Duck with Blackberry Sauce, we had both of them! For dessert, it was Mocha Creme Pie. All were outstanding.

This book is a class act; I just wish there were a hardcover version.

Remembering Patsy :
Published in Hardcover by Rutledge Hill Press (March, 2003)
Author: Brian Mansfield
Average review score:

Patsy is #1
Who wouldn't be captivated by the haunting voice of the late Patsy Cline. "Remembering Patsy" is a beautiful collection of photographs of the famed singer, and is a substantial tribute to the star who truly paved the way for today's female vocalists. Strong, witty, yet elegant, Patsy Cline will forever be remembered as a true legend.

You'll fall to pieces and be crazy over this book!
A must have for any Patsy Cline fan. This book, released in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of her tragic death in a plane crash, captures many different sides of the great Patsy Cline. The first all picture collection in a book of the legendary songstress, "Remembering Patsy" offers some rare, never before published pictures. The quality and sharpness is outstanding. To accompany each photograph is a reflection by her friends, fans, and family members. Some of the pictures included here capture Patsy at Carnegie Hall, Standing on the steps of City Hall in Manhattan accepting a key to the city, performing in Las Vegas, and sitting with a few fans at Tootsie's in Nashville. They provide another view of a woman who left this earth too long before her time, but has set the standard for all female country singers today. I would love to see a sequel to this book, possibly with color photographs.

Sergeant Presley: Our Untold Story of Elvis' Missing Years
Published in Hardcover by ECW Press (September, 2002)
Authors: Rex Mansfield, Elisabeth Mansfield, and as told to Marshall Terrill and Zoe Terrill
Average review score:

Marshall Terrill is the MAN!!!!!!!
Great read by one the best biographers in the business. I'd even let Terrill write my life story!

Keep up the good work Marshall. I can't wait for the Pete Maravich book!

great story by great people
I had the priviledge to know Rex And Elizabeth Mansfield when my husband was stationed in Germany in the early 90's. They are wonderful people and some of the most down-to- earth people I know. It was exciting to read about a time in their lives that I never really knew about. I knew Elizabeth had dated Elvis but did not realize how close they both were to him. I read every word knowing that it was true because I knew the writers. It gives youa great insight to realize that behind every famous person is just that, a real person, warts and all. I encourage every fan of Elvis to read this book because it is written by people who knew him and loved him.

Then Darkness Fled: The Liberating Wisdom of Booker T. Washington (Leaders in Action Series)
Published in Hardcover by Cumberland House (October, 1999)
Author: Stephen Mansfield
Average review score:

Terrific
In another sterling volume of the Leaders in Action series, Stephen Mansfield here outlines the life and character of Booker T. Washington. In vivacious voice and moving magniloquence, Mansfield traces Washington's path from slavery to his founding of Tuskegee Institute. He shows the difficulties Washington surpassed in reaching his goals, and the principles that helped him make it. In the words of Washington, "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succed." By this standard, Booker T. Washington was an astonishingly successful man.

Washington wrote his own autobiography, _Up From Slavery_, which must certainly not be neglected. But Mansfield's biography is also a criticial read because he includes facts that the autobiographer was too modest to mention, and he highlights wonderful aspects of Washington's character that humility prevented him from including. This biography doesn't contain the wonderful self-analysis and insight of Booker himself - but it does contain all the benefits of a third person account.

One thing I really appreciated about this book was its terrific analysis of slavery and inter-race reconciliation. Expounding Booker's opinion, Mansfield blames both whites and blacks for the problems that cropped up after the Civil War. Whites needed to repent of their brutal treatment of slaves and actually begin considering blacks more than mere animals; and blacks needed to repent of their spirit of bitterness toward their white enslavers, and begin working hard and leaving no excuse for disrespect of blacks. Too many books on reconciliation have practically advocated bitterness, hatred, and laziness when what is really needed is Washington's outlook of forgiveness and hard work. This book offers relief from such pride.

To wrap up, this is a great biography. Good history, good style, and good content. Buy it.

Outstanding biography of an outstanding Black American.
Then Darkness Fled is a celebration of the life of Booker T. Washinghton and tells of a man who dined with heads of state and became the first Afro-American to receive honorary degrees from Harvard and Dartmouth. Chapters survey both his achievements and his life in this lively coverage.
